Paris has been influential within the fashion industry since the first couturier houses were established in the city in 1858. Charles Frederick Worth was an Englishman, however more importantly he is considered to be the first fashion designer to have his name to a label, sewn into the garments. Worth opened the first fashion house in Paris and his success revolutionized fashion as it empowered designers, giving them influence over their customers fashion choices, a contradiction to the rich and powerful dictating fashion to the designers. Some of the most influential and famous clothes and designers have emerged from the city, including the concept of haute couture (‘high sewing’ or ‘high fashion’) which has become a ‘protected name’ in France.
